Charlotte Baris: Dear listeners, I offer you a little game to start this episode. Be careful, you have to be quick.

It’s about foreign policy and you have to find a personality… top: can you find this personality from the Midwest in the United States… A politician who was elected to Congress after military experience… He is a fan of Diet Mountain Dew, a caffeinated soda…

Ah, I heard two answers! Did you say Tim Walz or JD Vance? Well, both! These are the rare points in common between the two vice-presidential candidates, who are completely opposed on an ideological level. John Nance Garner, Franklin Roosevelt’s vice president between 1933 and 1941, once said, “The vice presidency is no more valuable than a bucket of hot piss.” In other, less trivial words: vice presidents often stay behind the scenes. But this exceptional campaign has shed light on these two running mates. They were therefore partly chosen for their origins: both come from the Midwest, a region often associated with rural, predominantly white and conservative America. It is also in this region that the results look very close. The role of the two vice-presidential candidates could prove crucial.
