That’s what the Netflix series Beef with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong is all about

Everything starts with a middle finger and two people who, after a near miss, take out all the pent-up frustration in their lives on each other. On the one hand we have Danny Cho (Steven Yeun), whose service company barely makes a profit. His brother Paul (Young Mazino) only gambles on the PC all day and the dream of buying a house for his parents living in Korea is becoming a distant dream.

The beef begins

His new sworn enemy is rich entrepreneur Amy Lau (Ali Wong). She appears to be living the perfect life as a wife, mother and career woman whose company is on the verge of a million-dollar sale. However, her fake smile is just a facade behind which she hides her fears, desires and desires an oddly sexual obsession with firearms hidden.

Amy and Danny find their mutual hatred to be the perfect outlet for the stress they are subjected to on a daily basis. In fact, they are not that dissimilar. Both are under enormous pressure to always please everyone. They work so hard that they forget to live. What separates them are the different social classeswhich became a prison for them.

In another universe, Amy and Danny might have been friends. In this reality, however, they only share one thing: the desire to destroy each other’s lives. The chaos they unleash quickly becomes a wildfire that spreads to all around them, threatening to burn everything around them.

Profundity and crushing hate: Is the Netflix series Beef worth it?

Superficially, Beef ranks in the genre of series about “terrible people doing terrible thingsThis includes car chases, catfishing, review bombing, peeing vandalism, and finally full escalation in the penultimate episode, which creates one of the series’ toughest moments of the year and is sure to leave some viewers in shock.

Beef is badass fun. Numerous exciting as well as stressful sequences ensure a lot of humor and intensity. But the series is more than that. With each new, insane twist, Amy and Danny’s story becomes more tragic. It hurts when they just can’t get out of their fight and keep falling back into destructive mode. The feud is the perfect distraction to escape the confrontation with your own problems – or to shift the blame for terrible deeds on others.

This empathy is due to the many excellently written and played characters. The series creates a microcosm of living characters and living environments that collide fatally with the eponymous beef. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Danny’s brother Paul, Amy’s husband George (Joseph Lee) or the manipulative billionaire Jordan (Maria Bello): behind almost every character there is one understandable tragedy and complexity. And that doesn’t make it any easier when they become collateral damage.

The narrative world of Beef opens up new fascinating levels as the story progresses. The series deals with complex issues such as mental illness and existential fears with amazing ease and cleverness, without mutating into a grueling psychodrama.

The fantastic ensemble, the rousing staging, often wild breaks in style (as in the surreal-emotional finale) and the Mix of black humor and emotional depth make beef a special series highlight. And the best part? With just 10 episodes of 30 minutes each, it’s also extremely entertaining.

  • Attention fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Beef is also worth a look for you. Series creator Lee Sung Jin and director Jake Schreier are collaborating again following Netflix production for the upcoming Marvel film Thunderbolts. He will also bring Steven Yeun into the MCU as a cast member.
