What kind of game is the Turkish-made Beach Invasion 1944?
Like many game lovers, games about World War II are very interesting to me. I think I can look at it a little bit differently because my interest is focused on the stories of the war rather than the games. The most familiar of these stories is the Normandy Landing, which took place on November 6, 1944. In all the films we have watched to date, we have seen the heroism of the Americans and their sacrifices to seize the coast through their eyes. It didn’t make us think about what happened on the other side. Until Beach Invasion 1944.
Let me tell you from the beginning, that the thought that I support this side or that side should not be perceived as certain. It is not possible for me to be on the side of one side in any war where people lose their lives. However, this point of view does not prevent my curiosity. That’s why I was excited when I first met the game. Because at the time of the landing, I had never thought about the point of view on the opposite side, and had not had the chance to experience it. For this reason, Beach Invasion 1944 stood before me as a production that deserved to be looked at. In addition, the fact that it was revealed by the Turkish development team AIx2 Games was another reason for me to check out the game.
mechanics
AIx2 Games’ description states that Beach Invasion 1944 “adds a dose of FPS realism to arcade-style shooter games”. In the game, you take on the role of an Axis soldier operating machine guns and artillery turrets to defend the Atlantic Wall. Our goal is to fend off the Allied forces attacking the coast. For this reason, we can use mines or explosive barrels alongside weapons such as rifles or cannons, and we can request artillery support when appropriate.
The production, which was prepared with the logic of Tower Defense games, was built on tours. There is a certain number of soldiers for you to destroy in each level. Our main goal is to kill them as quickly as possible and move on to the next level. However, this is not as easy as it seems. Because in the beginning, we have no control over any weapon other than the machine gun. As you play and collect points, you can unlock other weapons, repair them and access other features.
Accordingly, the game introduces slightly stronger enemies at each level. In the beginning, there are only soldiers descending from the barges, but other assault weapons such as jeeps and tanks are coming in the following stages. In addition, infantrymen are starting to arrive from landing planes. Of course, although it is not possible to deal with all of them at the same time, we need to destroy all of them when we can and reach the number given as a target.
Beach Invasion 1944 is a first-person view. This takes the construction beyond the logic of tower defense and you can be more involved in the action. You can also see that the soldiers you kill are sometimes repeated in slow motion. I couldn’t understand how he determined this, but it was a nice effect.
Weaponry
I told you there are different weapons in the game. However, you cannot use every weapon against every enemy. For example, it makes no sense to shoot an airplane with a rifle. You have to shoot them down with anti-aircraft. You cannot aim at infantry with antitank weapons. Even if you do, the result is not much. For this reason, you need to attack the element that threatens you the most during the attack, with the appropriate weapon. In addition, weapons have cooldowns, which we call cooldown. When you shoot with an anti-tank, you have to wait for a while to fire your second shot.
There was another point that bothered me here. You fight with what you choose among your weapons. However, the enemy does not stay idle, and attacks both you and your other weapons. Of course, that’s how it should normally be. However, when you are fighting with the machine gun, there is the destruction of the anti-aircraft, which you will need very soon. Maybe it would be more enjoyable if the destruction times on the weapons you don’t use are a little longer. I had a hard time with this at the beginning of the game. It wasn’t easy to decide whether to spend my accumulated points on repairs or on new defensive weapons.
Environment
The environment can change as the episodes progress. For example, the increased amount of fog or night attacks allow you to constantly set up your strategy in a different way. I have to say that I had a hard time in the night wars at first. When I first started, it was quite difficult for me to pass. However, when I thought to start following the bullet traces, I felt a little more relaxed after that. However, I have to say that it is not very easy.
Another detail I should give about Beach Invasion 1944 is that the episodes should not last longer than a few minutes. That’s why it became one of my favorite game mechanics. I can easily say that it is a game that I can briefly enter and exit between work or when I am bored. However, this situation brought with it another situation that bothered me a lot. Because when you exit the game, you have to go back to the beginning. Losing progress completely requires you to start over. I think it would be much better if they could fix this in the future.
