When we are about to buy an Android smartphone, we are generally interested in many criteria: design, size and quality of the screen, photo sensors, autonomy, processor, memory, storage capacity, price… But we often forget one yet very important detail: the manufacturer’s update policy. This ensures two types of updates over a given period: major updates of the operating system – which bring new functions as well as modifications to the interface – and security updates – which aim to correct flaws in the smartphone in order to protect it against viruses and other malware. After a period, the system remains stuck in one version, which limits the lifespan of the mobile – certain applications become incompatible and security vulnerabilities are no longer corrected, which exposes you to risks. Also, the longer the monitoring and the more responsive the deployment, the more the device will remain up to date and will therefore be protected from possible cyber threats. But these updates depend not on Google, but on the manufacturers’ update monitoring policy. And it varies considerably from manufacturer to manufacturer.

The Xiaomi case is a bit special. The manufacturer is very popular because it offers smartphones with excellent value for money, especially at the entry level. On the other hand, its tracking of Android updates leaves something to be desired and varies enormously depending on its brands and ranges. However, he strives to improve things. In 2021 it changed its software tracking policy and committed to providing four years of security updates and three years of major Android updates, but this only concerns smartphones from the Xiaomi 12 and up. 12 Pro. For other models, it is less. The Redmi Note and Mi benefit from two to three major updates, while the other Redmis have to make do with one or two Android updates…

Also, every year, new smartphones are “abandoned” by Xiaomi. On November 21, 2023, the manufacturer updated his list, by adding four smartphones, which will therefore no longer receive official updates from the manufacturer: the PocoX3, PocoX3 NFC, Xiaomi Mi 10T and Mi 10T Pro. Smartphones which were marketed in 2020 and which have benefited from three years of monitoring. Here is the complete list of Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco models that no longer support updates:

Xiaomi’s other smartphones should soon be able to benefit from Android 14, the deployment of which is being carried out gradually. The manufacturer was one of the first to deploy a new version of MIUI 14 – the in-house software overlay based on Android 14 – on the Xiaomi 13 Pro, Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 12T. On the other hand, we do not know the exact timetable for older models. Deploying the new version on so many smartphones will take time, and priority is as always given to the most recent high-end devices.
