In Nigeria, a Nollywood film outperforms American films after only two weeks of release. Battle on Buka Streeta Nigerian comedy-drama released in theaters on December 16, is even ahead of the famous Avatar 2, the way of the wateraccording to the country’s press.
Battle on Buka Street became the highest-grossing local debut film in the history of Nigerian cinema on its first day of operation. He earned 135 million naira that day, or nearly 285,000 euros: a real record, and a perfect way to end the year for the cinema of Nollywood.
This successful exit confirms an underlying trend noted during the year. Several Nigerian films have, in fact, competed with American films released in the country.
The kitchen at the heart of a passionate duel
This feature film which denounces polygamy draws its strength from the Nigerian reality. It is like a mirror of society in which spectators can find themselves. The action takes place in a neighborhood known for its cheap food, prepared and sold by talented women.
The film tells how two women engage in a fierce battle in order to win the title of “King of Buka Street”, a title conferred on the best seller of local dishes. The duel that takes place in the field of the kitchen evolves, charged with colors and music.
Battle on Buka Streetwhose protagonists converse mainly in English, was also released on Thursday, December 29 in several cities in the United States.
