Basketball’s Finnish Cups will be canceled because the parliamentary working group has not reached an agreement on ‘s funding.
The men’s and women’s basketball Finnish Cups will not be played in the 2024–25 season, the Basketball Association said in its announcement on Monday. The federal government approved the proposal of the adult main series group on the matter on August 31.
The reason why the cups are not played is that the parliamentary working group has not made a decision on ‘s funding. Originally, a decision on the matter was promised to be made before Midsummer of this year.
In the summer of 2021, Suomen Koripalloliitto ry and Yleisradio Oy signed an agreement regarding the semifinals and finals in 2022–24, which included an option for future seasons.
The condition of the option has been that the parliamentary working group makes a decision. The working group considering ‘s financing has not reached an agreement. The situation also affects the fact that there is no information about possible changes in sports televised so far.
The intention is to make the Suomen Cups a part of the Basketball Association’s competition system in the coming seasons.
