American basketball star Brittney Griner today pleaded guilty to the charges of drug offenses in a Russian court.
According to the news agency Reuters, which was present in court, she said that there was no intent and that she did not intend to break the law.
The American has been in custody in Russia since February 17 when she was arrested at an airport in Chimki outside Moscow after Russian authorities said they had found e-cigarettes with traces of cannabis oil.
The case has received much attention in the United States, where many believe she is being held as a political prisoner. Despite several attempts, it has not yet been possible to get the American home, but President Joe Biden promised yesterday to Griner’s wife that they are working to get her released as soon as possible.
Griner, who is one of the world’s best basketball players, now risks up to ten years in prison. The next court hearing is scheduled for July 14.
