Coach Vincent Collet’s Blues have inherited an “affordable” group with Germany, Japan and Brazil for this group stage.The tournament will be one of the toughest in history. There are almost only strong teams. We knew before the draw that the United States would be in Group C and that we could not play them in the first round. We took the Germans, world champions and now a major team.” explained Vincent Collet. For the women, Jean-Aimé Toupane’s Blues will meet Australia, Canada and Nigeria. We know that the 12 teams are strong. It won’t be easy. They are athletic teams, it will be very important beyond basketball, it’s very homogeneous. Avoiding Team USA, a relief? Yes, but it’s mainly because we have clear ideas. We have ambition. Each match will be a final.”

What is the format?
Twelve teams, including the French team, will compete over 15 days of competition. The twelve competing nations are divided into three groups of four. Australia, Greece, Canada and Spain are in Group A; France, Germany, Japan and Brazil in Group B; Serbia, South Sudan, Puerto Rico and the United States in Group C. The top two teams in each group will qualify for the quarter-finals, as well as the two best third-placed teams. Furthermore, the two best first-placed teams will not be able to play each other before the final. An objective clearly announced by the coach of the Blues, Vincent Collet, in order to avoid the Americans before the final.
