American actress Laverne Cox, known for her role in the series Orange is the new black, inspired the brand to create a transgender doll.
Inspired by the famous transgender actress Laverne Cox, Mattel has just launched in the United States a whole new Barbie doll, inclusive and transgender. Indeed, for several years, the brand has been trying to market models that are more representative of society, with the desire not to exclude anyone. Thus, far from the blue-eyed blonde Barbie doll, often accused of being far too stereotyped and skinny, the brand offers versions closer to reality. After disabled dolls, round dolls, bald Barbies or even Ken with vitiligo… Here is the whole thing first transgender model !
For actress Laverne Cox, this Barbie doll bearing his likeness could allow those concerned to find hope and “dream big”. “It’s incredibly meaningful to me to have my Barbie doll for so many reasons (…) I hope kids of all gender identities can look at this Barbie and dream.” she told the BBC.
This transgender barbie is dressed in a ball gown made with red tulle and can of course be transformed with different outfits. It will be sold at a price of approximately 37 euros (40 dollars).
