Barbie director is supposed to save fantasy epic that was thought to be dead for Netflix, but she has “recurring nightmares” about it

Barbie director is supposed to save fantasy epic that was

After the success of Barbie, all doors are open for director Greta Gerwig. Even before the toy satire with Margot Robbie conquered the world, Gerwig signed a contract with Netflix: She will Narnia books remake for the streaming service.

In 2018, Netflix bought the rights to the series created by CS Lewis, which was previously theatrically released by Disney and 20th Century Fox. Three blockbusters were released between 2006 and 2010. However, the series was discontinued unfinished due to declining success. Now comes the new start under Gerwig – and she takes her job very (!) seriously.

“It’s hard”: Greta Gerwig is dreading the mammoth fantasy project Narnia

Narnia

At the London Film Festival Gerwig spoke about “recurring nightmares”that the thought of Narnia would bring her. She doesn’t mention the title directly, but rather refers to it “something she’s working on”. But already in July Gerwig stated “terrible fear” before the project.

Is it because of the size of the project? Gerwig is said to be making at least two Narnia films for Netflix. Due to the popularity of the books, great expectations will be attached to the works. However, with Barbie, Gerwig has sufficiently proven that she can handle well-known brands. Gerwig also interprets her uneasy gut feeling as a “generally a good sign”.

[…] If I’m not afraid, I might think, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do this.’ I’m terribly afraid of it. It is extraordinary. And it’s exciting.

The development of the Narnia films is still in its early stages. We do not expect it to be released on Netflix before 2025.
