Barbie breaks 33 year cinema record but part 2 already has

The record reports about Barbie don’t stop. After its third weekend, the film adaptation of the toy brand of the same name from Mattel call it a billionaire, as Variety reports. Barbie is currently number 45 on the all-time charts. A historic event: For the first time in history, a film directed solely by a female director passes this mark.

The only two directors who were able to land billions in success before Greta Gerwig were always part of a directing duo. Jennifer Lee co-directed the two Frozen films with Chris Buck (Part 1: $1.285 billion grossing, Part 2: $1.453 billion grossing). Anna Boden is the co-director of Captain Marvel ($1.131 billion at gross), alongside Ryan Fleck.

Barbie becomes a billionaire at the box office, breaking a 33-year-old box office record

If we only look at the US numbers, Barbie even breaks a record that has been held by Home Alone for 33 years. The movie is the highest grossing comedy in the US. In a box office report from the weekend, Screen Rant breaks down the numbers: Where the Christmas comedy grossed $286 million in the United States, Barbie now comes in at $459 million.

Barbie is well on her way to becoming most successful film of the year to become and surpass the $1.35 billion The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With such a box-office triumph, it’s surprising that Warner Bros. hasn’t announced a sequel yet. Based on a report by the Hollywood Reporter, Barbie 2 has three problems in its way.

Before Barbie 2 has to be renegotiated: the continuation of the fantasy comedy has not yet been decided

Neither director Greta Gerwig nor Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling have signed an option for part 2 in their contract. That is absolutely unusual for a project of this magnitude. Hollywood studios typically sign the talent from their blockbuster productions for multiple films. Now Warner has to sit down again at the negotiating table with Gerwig, Robbie and Gosling.

That’s very good for the stars: now, with the success of the first part in the billions behind them, they can do theirs renegotiate fees, talks about Barbie 2 should get concrete. However, due to the double strike in Hollywood, this will not be possible for the time being. However, Mattel has expressed great interest in following on from the success of Barbie, either with Part 2 or in the form of another toy adaptation.

Barbie has been running since July 20, 2023 in German cinemas. Along with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, which started on the same day, you can check out the ultimate double feature of the summer: Barbenheimer.
