Barbie beats the next DC record and will make film

It is the biggest success story of the cinema year so far: Barbie, the film adaptation of the Mattel toy brand of the same name, is well on its way to becoming a… most successful film of the year to become. In its second weekend, Barbie was able to claim impressive numbers at the box office.

Having already broken several records at launch, Barbie can now add another to the list. As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, Barbie Warner Bros. has the most lucrative first week in the studio’s history. The film directed by Greta Gerwig even surpasses The Dark Knight.

On a budget of $145 million, Barbie has already grossed $775 million. If, for some unforeseen reason, the numbers don’t collapse completely, the film should be out in a few days exceed the billion mark and write film history. Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) would be the first female director to pull off such a gigantic box office hit on her own.

The only two directors who have been able to land billions in success with their films have always been Part of a directing duo. Jennifer Lee co-directed the two Frozen films with Chris Buck (Part 1: $1.285 billion grossing, Part 2: $1.453 billion grossing). Anna Boden is the co-director of Captain Marvel ($1.131 billion at gross), alongside Ryan Fleck.
