Utrecht is still far from the recommended values of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 2021, according to figures. To comply with the standard, emissions of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter must be halved.
According to the municipality, the main sources of air pollution in Utrecht are road traffic, wood burning, fireworks, smoking, industry and mobile equipment such as construction machines. Air pollution from outside the city mainly comes from road traffic (Rijkswegen), industry, agriculture and inland shipping. The most effective measures to tackle these sources are now being investigated.
