Barack Obama returns to the screens from this Wednesday, May 17 in a documentary series produced by Netflix and entitled Working: What we do all day (“ Work: what we do every day “). The former president wonders about the report of his compatriots at work.
What makes a good job… good? What makes you happy in your job? The tone is set from the trailer for this series, which will be divided into four 45-minute episodes. Barack Obama once again puts his talents as a narrator to good use and appears alongside employees in the hotel, home care and technology sectors in particular. Jobs that are generally low-paying and exhausting.
The former president met these employees often in the workplace. He asked these women and men to recount their experiences, their expectations, their worries. Whether they are home help, chambermaid, or switchboard operator, they often express themselves spontaneously. With one constant in these different testimonies: they want, despite the daily difficulties, to pursue their American dream. Namely this idea that anyone can become rich one day through their work and their determination.
During these four episodes, Barack Obama’s screen appearances are judiciously limited. He is here rather the narrator of all these stories.
This documentary series is taken from a book of the same name, published in 1974 by Studs Terkel, a great figure on the American left. Already this book Working chronicled the lives of Americans of the time, their jobs and the impact of their work on their lives.
