Steve Bannon, a close adviser to US President Donald Trump, will testify before the congressional committee investigating the storming of the Capitol on January 6 last year.

Bannon has previously refused to appear when the committee called him. But late last Saturday (US time), one of his lawyers announced in a letter to the committee that the former White House strategist is now willing to be questioned about the events that led to the storm when five people lost their lives.

Steve Bannon has long refused to heed the committee’s summonses and is threatened with legal action for failing to appear.

– I expect that we will hear from him, and we have many questions to ask him, says Zoe Lofgren, democratic member of the committee.

The hearings in the House of Representatives are chaired by a committee of seven Democrats and two Republicans.

The January 6 committee was formed in the House of Representatives on the initiative of the Democrats in the summer of 2021, after Trump-loyal Republicans in Congress stopped the effort on a more ambitious national commission to investigate the issue.

The storm divides the United States, where many believe that Donald Trump was the trigger. Others do not think he can be held responsible for what happened. Through the hearings, the committee tries to get an answer to that question.
