Steve Bannon, a former adviser to ex-President Donald Trump, will go on trial next May on charges that he defrauded people who donated money to a campaign to build a wall along the US border with Mexico, a judge said.
Bannon is suspected of having falsely promised donors that all money given to the campaign would go towards building the wall. Prosecutors allege he instead used donated money to enrich himself and others involved in the project.
The trial against Bannon will begin on May 27, 2024, in the same Manhattan courtroom in New York where Trump is to be tried only two days earlier in a case unrelated to Bannon’s.
The 69-year-old Bannon was sentenced last October to four months in prison for contempt of Congress for refusing to be questioned about the storming of the US Capitol building in January 2021.
