Bank branches continue to decline in 2023

(Finance) – The decline in bank branches in Italy continues. During 2023, there was a reduction in the number of active bank branches in Italy, from 20,985 at the end of 2022 to 20,161 at the end of 2023 (-824 branches; -3.9 percent).
This is what emerges from the publication Banks and financial institutions: territorial breakdown for the year 2023 disseminated by Bank of Italy, published annually and contains statistics on the territorial structure of the credit and financial system, in particular on the number of financial intermediaries, branches and employees, broken down by geographical location and type of intermediary.

The decrease – explains Via Nazionale – affected all regions and was percentage-wise more accentuated in the Marche, Abruzzo and Sicily.

As for the territorial structure of banking branches operating in Italy at the end of 2023, it shows a greater presence in the Northern regions, which represent 57 percent of the national total (40 percent in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Veneto). The number of branches located in the regions of The South and the Islands amount to a total of 22 percent of the national total.
