Bangladesh court issues arrest warrant for former prime minister Sheikh

Hasina and her aides are accused of being responsible for hundreds of deaths during the summer protests.

In Bangladesh, the court issued an arrest warrant for the exiled former prime minister on Thursday From Sheikh Hasina. In addition, an arrest warrant was also issued for 45 other people, some of whom are Hasina’s close aides.

Prosecutor of BM Sultan Mahmud according to the entire group, they are accused of crimes against humanity during the popular uprising seen in Bangladesh in July and August. Hasina and her aides are said to have been responsible for the deaths of demonstrators after the protests turned violent.

According to the prosecutor, the arrest warrant requires Hasina to appear in court on November 18.

The demonstrations in Bangladesh, which started in July from the student movement, demanded the dismantling of the quota system for government posts. The quota system was criticized for favoring groups that support the country’s government.

Violent protests continued in Bangladesh for weeks, with at least 300 people killed in the protests, according to hospital sources. Hasina finally fled the country to India on August 5.

77-year-old Hasina was in power in Bangladesh for 15 years. During that time, large-scale human rights violations took place in the country, such as mass arrests of Hasina’s political opponents and large-scale executions.
