What happened when Johan Esplund collapsed? In the video above, the coach describes what he calls a “hero effort”.
It was during the Friday evening in connection with the meeting between Villa Lidköping and Gripen in the bandy’s elite series that the accident occurred.
At the beginning of the second half, Gripen’s Johan Esplund got stuck in a Villa player and hit the ice. Players and medical staff arrived quickly and the 41-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance.
– Theo Lewerin is a hero who has such good presence of mind in that situation, says Joakim Hedqivst.
The coach had to call an ambulance: “Would have preferred to escape”
The grip coach says that Esplund is happy that he is feeling as well as he is. He is also grateful for Lewerin’s quick and very important contribution.
– But he also has views on the healthcare system, for example I had to call an ambulance, which would have been avoided in that situation.
How is Johan today?
– Johan is fine under the circumstances. We have just had contact so he will leave the hospital today and rest at home, says Hedqvist.
The players refused to finish
Hedqivst says that it was emotional and difficult to see a teammate like that. A difficult situation to deal with.
– One thinks of Johan’s family and children. There are many thoughts that spin and sports become secondary.
How do you think as a coach when this happens?
– We talked to each other and then we will also meet tomorrow to talk it out, we are going to play bandy again next week. We have to deal with it between us, but we have received support and help.
What happens with the match, which Villa led 5-0, is unclear. The competition committee will make a decision early next week.
– I am unaware of what applies.
