Baltic states want no-fly zone over Ukraine – NATO opposes guarding airspace with Russia

Baltic states want no fly zone over Ukraine NATO opposes

Other NATO countries have been very negative about the establishment of a no-fly zone, which could lead to war spreading beyond Ukraine.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are calling for a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

In addition, the countries are calling for other measures to quell the Russian invasion.

In the past, the Estonian Parliament has called for a no-fly zone over Ukraine. Last Monday, it adopted a statement on Russia’s military action in Ukraine, addressed to the parliaments of EU member states and members of the NATO Alliance and other states.

The Estonian Parliament called on the UN Member States to take immediate action to establish a no-fly zone in order to avoid a large number of civilian casualties. The statement also called, among other things, for states to close their own airspace and ports to Russian ships.

Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are the first NATO countries to take a formal stand in favor of establishing a no-fly zone.

The establishment of a no-fly zone would be a military intervention

A no-fly zone prohibits the flight of military aircraft in a certain area. The no-fly zone would probably be controlled by NATO in this case. In practice, this would mean that the Russian plane over Ukraine would be shot down by the regulator.

Among other things, the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg has watched (switch to another service)that the establishment of a no-fly zone could lead to a full-scale war in Europe between NATO and Russia.

For weeks, Ukraine has been calling on NATO to declare the country a no-fly zone.
