Grym is one of the first bosses you’ll encounter in Baldur’s Gate 3, and he has real boss mechanics like you’d find in an MMO. The boss can be pretty tough, but is easy to defeat with various techniques – if you know them.
What kind of boss is that?
That’s why Grym is considered an “easy” boss: Hardly any player will have understood or used the actual mechanics on their first attempt. In fact, some even say that the fight is much easier if you play it wrong.
Grym caused a lot of creativity in the community because people had to think about how the hell they were going to get past this boss. This gave rise to some crazy ideas and builds, as well as the meme of fat owlbears one-shotting the boss.
Because the boss appears so early in the game and tips were circulated so quickly, Grym is considered a free loot boss who can’t do anything, especially among veterans. This has been a disaster for a new player.
Reddit user Infinite_jess complains: “You said the boss was easy peasy, what the hell!” The player writes that he brought spells with him, Gale and his main character, to deal with the Mephits.
In the end, however, that wasn’t enough: Grym simply rolled over him and in the end only Shadowheart was left standing, high up on the stairs and with a potion of Hill Giant Strength inside him, to throw objects at the boss until he died. Ultimately, however, he had to retreat, revive the group and start again.
Problems in Baldur’s Gate 3? Here are five helpful tips:
“It’s easy to cheese – you don’t cheese”
In the comments, Infinite_jess is made aware of the error. Grym is easy if you exploit mechanics – but that’s exactly what didn’t happen here. User 13Urdt35 explains:
Tip: You can shoot the lava lever. For those who want to know the exact cheese: You can drive down the platform and do anything EXCEPT pull the lava lever. Then fast travel back. Hold someone up at the top of the stairs, then fire at the lever. Grym will spawn, but will have no way of getting to you.
You can use things like Eldritch Beam or Returning Spike to take him out completely risk-free. If you want to be 110% safe, hide when the Mephites spawn until Grym takes them out for you.

It seems that even many players were unaware of this exact procedure. One user replied: “Why am I only finding this out now?!” […] I spent 5 hours fighting until I won…”
There are other tips that were probably not very well known, such as that “heating metal” works in the same way as lava. But the easiest way is still to give Lae’zel and Karlach a big hammer and just beat Grym to pieces.
