Many people have stolen Baldur’s Gate 3 without knowing it. The developer doesn’t think that’s a bad thing and even gives them the game for free.
When gaming companies accidentally give something away, the mistake is usually fixed pretty quickly. A free DLC, an incorrect activation – a quick patch fixes such peculiarities. But Larian is different and says with Baldur’s Gate 3: It’s fine, you can keep it.
What was the problem? Anyone who wanted to buy the physical version of the Collector’s Edition of Baldur’s Gate 3 had to wait quite a long time. In many cases, it is only just being delivered and arriving to people.
However, buyers have already received a key to redeem in advance, with which they can unlock the Collector’s Edition DLC – these are some cosmetic goodies.
In fact, the code on the Xbox ensured that the entire game was unlocked.
Anyone who noticed this could have used their DLC code to get Baldur’s Gate 3 or simply passed this code on to a friend or acquaintance.
What did Larian do now? In a message to the community, Larian explained that they have now identified the error. However, people who own the game illegally will not have it taken away. They will be allowed to keep the full version, even if the code is not actually intended to unlock it.
In addition, the affected people will receive another DLC code so that they can finally unlock it.
This is how the community reacts: They are celebrating Larian’s actions. They believe that others should follow suit. Some fans believe that other companies have turned this into a huge PR disaster and either deactivated the versions or took extra money from the fans in other ways. The fact that Larian treats the community so well simply shows that they know exactly how good their game actually is.
The fact that Larian doesn’t do exactly that and instead says “It’s fine” makes her a hero in the eyes of many.
