Why is that? For Michael Douse there is a very clear explanation for the good numbers: the newly introduced mod support.
With the last major patch, Baldur’s Gate 3 introduced official mod support. There were already mods on Steam and platforms like Nexusmods before, but now they can mostly be selected and managed directly in the game. This makes it worlds easier to use.
By the way, the mod support is reason enough for some players for the second, third or even sixth run: Reddit user Glorf_Warlock writes that the mods would make the gameplay even fresher.
