Baldur’s Gate 3 has many epic quests, but one is a total waste of time

From Act 1 to Act 3, Baldur’s Gate 3 manages to hold your attention with a flood of epic quests and contracts. However, there is one task that you can safely ignore.

What task is it? The quest line in question revolves around Oskar Fevras, the artist. You can first meet him in Act 1 when you enter the Zhentarim Hideout in Wauken’s Rest. The Zhentarim are a mercenary group who hide there from the soldiers patrolling Waukens Rest.

You meet the mercenaries as part of the quest series for the lost cargo. This is a quest reward for winning a battle on the Road of Resurrection. You have to fight a horde of gnolls who are keeping two of the Zhentarim mercenaries at bay in a cave.

Once you get your hands on the cargo, you can open it and pocket the container inside. A so-called viewer is locked inside. The spherical creature has 150 hit points, hundreds of small eyes and one large eye, as well as a huge mouth. During combat you can throw the container once and gain an advantage.

However, you should bring the cargo together to the Zhentarim. Then you miss the viewer, but you also don’t have to face the mercenaries, which makes saving the artist easier.

Unfortunately, the rewards are only partially worth your time

What do you get when you complete the task? If you successfully complete the quest in Act 3, Oskar Fevras will paint you a picture. Unfortunately, you have no influence on what kind of image this will be. It can be a portrait of a random companion, but it can also simply represent one of your hirelings that you can rent via Lazarus.

You can also look forward to a corresponding achievement if you successfully complete it. But that’s all you can look forward to. And that after about 16 in-game quests that have to be completed successfully.

What do you have to do to graduate? First of all you have to get Oskar out of the mercenary cave alive. You can buy him out for 1000 gold – a large sum in Act 1. The mercenary who owns Oskar can also be convinced or threatened accordingly.

If Oskar survives the hiding place, you will meet him again in Act 3 in Baldur’s Gate. There you then have to follow the newly opened quest series. The jobs are long and complex, but the story is interesting.

Should you save Oskar or not? The question has two facets: If you want to play a good character, saving yourself is the morally right decision. An evil character, on the other hand, can care less about Oskar.

On the meta level comes the facet of what you want as a player. Would you like to unlock the achievement at the end that is available for the quest line? Or are you particularly keen on your random portrait? In both cases it would be advisable to save the artist.

How did you decide? Was Oskar allowed to live in freedom or did you leave him to the mercenaries? Feel free to write it to us in the comments.
