In September 2021, two large plane trees on the square were urgently cut down on the side of the Manneken Pis fries baker. Since then there are “two sad-making stumps on which chips trays are placed”, say council members of the Party for the Animals, Utrecht Solidair and BIJ1. They also point out that a lime tree that was planted relatively recently on the square has also died and that the council is “not generous with information”.
