Back to school under tension in France in the face of the shortage of teachers

Back to school under tension in France in the face

Will there be ” a teacher in front of each class “, as promised by Pap Ndiaye? Less than ten days before the reopening of schools, it is a major challenge for the Minister of National Education, who will make his first return to school under the sign of an unprecedented recruitment crisis.

Mathematics, German, classics… France lacks teachers in several specialties. This year, more than 4,000 positions have not been filled in teacher competitions, according to figures from the French Ministry of National Education.

In the first degree (nursery and elementary schools), serious competition deficits were recorded in the Ile-de-France academies, with, for example, barely more than 900 candidates recruited out of 1,665 open positions in Créteil, south-east of Paris . In the second degree, several subjects are on their side far from having filled the competition, such as German, classics, physics-chemistry or mathematics.

There will be a teacher in front of each class in all schools in France “Says however the Minister of Education Pap Ndiaye. But to achieve this objective, the Minister recognizes that it will be thanks to the use of contract workers who, unlike the holders, have not passed a competition.

Increase all wages

Guylaine David, general secretary of SNUipp, the main primary school union, is ironic in saying that, of course, the students will not be alone: “ We will certainly have adults in the classes, sometimes it will be substitutes who will be put in the place of teachers, and sometimes it will be contract workers who will be recruited, who are recruited without having sufficient training to teach. »

Guylaine David insists. To respond to the teacher recruitment crisis, salaries must be increased and not only for teachers at the start of their careers to whom the government promises 2,000 euros net per month. ” First, these 2,000 euros net per month which are announced, they were announced for five years. Jean-Michel Blanquer had announced it to us for five years. We are redone the game of 2,000 euros net. Currently a teacher to receive 2,000 euros net per month, a school teacher, must wait 15 years of seniority, so we know that the shortfall is enormous. We must review the entire salary grid, and we need a substantial upgrade. »

The union is asking for a salary increase of 300 euros net per month for all teachers.
