Baby Yoda was shamelessly stolen from cult 80s horror film

Baby Yoda has not only taken the Star Wars universe by storm, but our world as well. As soon as little grogu first appeared in The Mandalorian, the internet was flooded with memes, fan art and happy reactions. Overnight, Baby Yoda became a pop culture phenomenonwhich inspires to this day.

However, the cute companion of the Mandalorian may only be a bold copy. At least that’s what Gremlins creator Joe Dante claims. In a recent interview, the filmmaker ramps up the comparison and shows clear parallels between Baby Yoda and the gizmo he created.

Criticized Star Wars Darling: Long before Baby Yoda, Gizmo was adorable in the Gremlins films

While there are key differences between Baby Yoda and Gizmo, there are certain similarities between the characters undeniable. IndieWire captured the key interview passage with Dante:

I think for longevity [von Gremlins] is especially [Gizmo] responsible, who is basically a baby. Which of course brings me to the subject of Baby Yoda, the completely stolen and just copied. Shameless I would say.

Gizmo in Gremlins

It is unclear whether the creative minds at Lucasfilm actually used Gizmo from the Gremlins films when creating Baby Yoda. Last but not least exist numerous other characters in the film and series history, which are conceived similarly to Grogu, not to mention their own Star Wars role model, Yoda.

Baby Yoda’s return awaits us next year on Disney+. in the February 2023 The third season of The Mandalorian is scheduled to start on the streaming service.
