Video clips circulating on social media show a burning house in the town of Khomein, in western Markazi province in central Iran. The house is said to belong to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder and first leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Several media agencies have verified the videos and the information about Khomeini’s burning house, but the Iranian state media denies that any attack has taken place on the religious leader’s childhood home.

Born in the house

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini is said to have been born at the turn of the century in the house located in the town of Khomein, from which he got his surname. The house is today a museum commemorating his legacy.

Ruhollah Khomeini was the founder and first leader of the Islamic Republic. In 1989 he died, after which his successor Ayatollah Ali Khamenei took power as the second leader of the Islamic Republic.
