Avon Maitland District School Board seeking community partners to provide

The Avon Maitland District School Board is looking to partner with community based and non-profit organizations that can provide tutoring programs this summer for students who need some extra help with math and reading following disruptions to their education during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Avon Maitland District school board is looking for potential partnerships with community-based and non-profit organizations capable of providing summer tutoring for students who need help with math and reading in the wake of disruptions to in-class learning during the COVID-19 pandemic .

The school board recently received tutoring grant funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education to help bolster its Tutoring Supports Program this summer.

“The Ministry of Education has released funding to all the school boards in the province to initiate and form partnerships with community organizations, as well as third-party providers, to implement tutoring programs,” said school board communications manager Chera Longston. “So (we’re) requesting information from local providers. It’s not really a bidding process. It’s not a traditional request for proposals. It’s just a request for information.

“So basically, they can provide some background information, information about their tutoring program, how they would have students access the program, how they would measure success, etc.”

Ultimately, Longston said the school board is hoping to have a wide array of tutoring programs available in communities across the Avon-Maitland catchment area from July 1 to Aug. 31 for students who have been identified as needing help with literacy, numeracy and other foundational learning skills following the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Early readers might be one (student) group that we would be targeting and kids who were sort of at an early point in learning numeracy and literacy,” Longston said. “These couple years that we just went through were sort of the critical learning years (for a lot of students), so if they haven’t been able to move forward as they normally would have, it’s a chance to get them back up to speed.”

To provide more information on the Tutoring Supports Program for potential partners, the school board will host a virtual information and question-and-answer session on May 11 at 2 pm To register for that session and to determine if an organization or tutoring provider is eligible for this program, email Avon Maitland District school board manager of procurement services Alicia McCreight at [email protected].

The deadline for request-for-information submissions to the school board is May 20 at 4 pm
