1. Keep track of what applies

Since June 2017, you can use your mobile in all EU countries without extra costs. This also applies in Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein.

But there are some exceptions.

In some small states and territories, there are charges for browsing, calling and texting. Although you might think it is within the EU.

Monaco and Andorra are not included in EU roaming, nor is Gibraltar which is part of the UK.

Switzerland, Serbia, Turkey, and Great Britain are examples of countries where EU roaming does not apply. Specific rules apply here that vary depending on the operator.

Check what applies with your operator before you leave to avoid extra costs.

2. Review the most affordable options

If you are planning to travel further to reach a holiday paradise, there are a few things you should be aware of.

It can be expensive to call, surf and even receive calls outside the EU/EEA, unless the operator has a roaming agreement with an operator in the country you are traveling to.

If you call from Mexico or the USA with your Swedish mobile subscription to the home of a friend or relative in Sweden, you pay according to the operator’s price list for the specific country.

The cost varies between operators.

Before you travel, it may instead be worth reviewing different types of packages and extra subscriptions. According to the site Mobil.se some operators may offer overseas packages that give you better tariffs or call minutes.

Another option to use the mobile more cheaply abroad is to get a local SIM card. If your phone supports e-SIM, you can even do it easily directly on the mobile without searching for a local dealer.

3. Avoid expensive networks

When you are abroad, the phone can choose any operator. Then it usually chooses the one with the best coverage.

But it also means that your mobile can connect to networks in other countries if you are near borders or on ferries. Then it can be expensive.

To avoid being switched to a more expensive network, you can turn off the automatic network selection.

To do that, you go into the mobile’s settings. On an iPhone, select Mobile network/Select network and switch off automatically.

  • Iphone: Settings/Mobile network/Mobile data options
  • Samsung: Settings/Connections/Mobile networks
  • Other Android mobiles: Settings/Network and Internet/Internet/”Gear”
  • Then you can choose which network your phone should connect to.

    4. Save your data

Just turning on your mobile opens it up to use your mobile data.

So you don’t even have to open your banking apps or social media for the phone bill to go away.

To avoid extra charges, it is best to turn off mobile data on your phone. But you can also reduce data costs by turning off apps running in the background.

    Here’s how you do it:

  • Iphone: Settings/Mobile network/mobile data
  • Samsung: settings/Connections/Data usage/mobile data
  • Other Android Mobiles: Settings/Network and Internet/Internet/”Gear”/Mobile data
  • Apps can often be used offline if content is downloaded beforehand.

    5. Back up the photos

A central part of traveling is capturing your moments with vacation photos.

In order not to risk losing your photos, it is wise to back up your files to the cloud already during the trip.

You can use services such as Icloud for iPhone, Dropbox, Microsoft Onedrive or any other cloud service.

If you are in a country where mobile data is expensive, it is best to use a Wi-Fi network for regular backup.

However, if you are traveling within the EU and have a large data pool, you can even activate backup via the mobile network to ensure that the photos are backed up immediately.
