Avatar 2 director James Cameron takes a stab at Marvel

In December the time has finally come and Avatar 2: The Way of Water is coming after what felt like an eternity of waiting to the movies. An interview with director James Cameron and some cast members such as Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana has now appeared in the New York Times.

In the longer conversation, the Avatar 2 director also gives his opinion on modern superhero cinema – and criticizes harshlywhich is understandable even for Marvel fans.

For James Cameron, superhero movies don’t depict real adult life

In the Avatar sequel, Jake Sully and Neytiri live with their three Na’vi children. One aspect of the sci-fi blockbuster is to the family life of the main characters and all the feelings around it illuminate. Exactly what James Cameron lacks in superhero films, as he explains in the New York Times interview:

When I watch these big, spectacular movies – I watch you, Marvel and DC – it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They have relationships, but they don’t really. They never have to back down because of their children. The things that really ground us and give us strength, love and purpose? These characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make films.

Especially the Marvel movies always only just touch on the private and family life of the main characters. Perhaps James Cameron would be happier with the new MCU series like WandaVision and Hawkeye, in which personal aspects of the characters are explored more deeply. But he is definitely right in his criticism.

With Avatar 2 – The Way of Water, the director apparently shows that blockbuster spectacle and mature character depth can come together. The most anticipated blockbuster of the year is on from December 14th in our cinemas.
