(Finance) – Nel construction site of San Giorgio in Saliciin the municipality of Sona in the province of Verona, was the diaphragm of the San Giorgio tunnel was demolished. The excavation of one of the most important works of the new High Speed/High Capacity (HS/AC) Brescia Est – Verona railway route has thus been completed.
The ceremony, which took place on the construction site of San Giorgio in Salici (VR), was attended by the Vice President of the Veneto Region, Elisa De Bertithe CEO and General Director of the Italian Railway Network, Gianpiero Strisciugliothe Government Commissioner of the work and Deputy General Director of the Italian Railway Network Vincenzo Macello accompanied by the President of Cepav due Franco Lombardi. Also present was the Mayor of Sona, Gianfranco Dalla Valentina.
The new line is among the works financed by the PNRR and represents one of the pieces of the Mediterranean Core Corridor which will connect the ports of the southern Iberian Peninsula with the Ukrainian border, passing through southern France, Northern Italy and Slovenia, with a section in Croatia. Thus the works of Cepav due, the Eni Consortium for high speed, continue, commissioned by the Italian Railway Network with High Surveillance and Works Management by Italferr, both companies of the FS Group.
With the completion of the excavation of the San Giorgio natural tunnel, the construction of the four tunnels of the HS/HC Brescia Est – Verona line is completed, having concluded the excavations of the Lonato, Calcinato and Colle Baccotto natural tunnels in recent months. The San Giorgio natural tunnel, having a length of approximately 1,450 metres, is part of the complex San Giorgio tunnel system formed not only by the natural tunnel but also by two artificial approach tunnels for a total length of over 3,400 metres. The construction works of the natural tunnel, excavated with traditional techniques on two contemporary fronts, began in the first months of 2021.
The San Giorgio natural gallery leads the railway route from South to North of the A4 Brescia – Padua motorwayalongside the conventional Milan-Venice railway line along the existing infrastructure corridor. During the complex undercrossing of the motorway, the construction of the tunnel was carried out in various phases which involved the temporary diversion of both motorway carriageways for approximately 1.5 km, always guaranteeing the continuity of vehicular traffic and greater safety during the excavation.
Various companies and more than one hundred people participated in the creation, on a continuous weekly cycle, as well as dozens of companies supporting the work.
The works to complete the San Giorgio tunnel will continue in the coming months and include, in addition to the restoration of the motorway carriageways to their original route, the creation of the definitive coverings and finishes up to the installation of the railway superstructure and the installation of the technological part.
The HS/HC Brescia Est -Verona line, developing mostly alongside the A4 Milan – Venice motorway and the conventional railway line, crosses the Lombardy and Veneto regions, 11 municipalities in the provinces of Brescia, Verona and Mantua (the latter for road works only) and involves the construction of a railway route of approximately 48 km, including the 2.2 km of the “Verona Merci” interconnection connecting with the railway axis Verona – Brenner.
The completion of the Milan – Verona line, of which the Milan – Treviglio section has already been in operation since 2007 and the Treviglio – Brescia section since 2016, will allow reduce interference between different transport flows, making circulation more fluid and increasing traffic capacity in the railway hubs of Brescia and Verona, with benefits on the regularity and punctuality of both long-distance and regional services as well as freight transport.
Cantieri Parlanti – The HS/HC Brescia Est – Verona railway connection is among the strategic works of the Cantieri Parlanti project, an initiative of the FS Group (with the companies RFI and Italferr), conducted in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the companies involved in the works and, where present, with the Extraordinary Government Commissioners.
The FS Group shipyards “speak” a simple, transparent and immediate language, shared with the territories, to tell their story and their mission and to make citizens and stakeholders more aware and updated on the importance of the works in progress. An operation of transparency, as well as information, to illustrate the advantages of the work and provide updated data through panels located inside the construction sites, but always clearly visible to citizens and to those traveling on the lines and roads adjacent to the construction sites.
Cantieri Parlanti also communicate via a page dedicated to strategic workspresent on the web portal, updated on the progress of the activities. Finally, they will be organised ad hoc initiatives which transform construction sites into true communication hubs, open to the external public (citizens, associations, students, etc.) to encourage moments of discussion on the transformations that entire urban areas are experiencing and will experience thanks to the work in progress.
