Automated license plate recognition and in-car camera systems which were installed in Brantford police vehicles in May are now becoming operational.

The use of the systems “will allow officers to quickly identify license plates and vehicles linked with traffic or criminal offenses,” said a news release issued by police.
The systems are mounted on the windshield of patrol vehicles and include an in-car facing camera and a front-facing dash camera to continuously scan passing license plates while the officer drives through the city.
The in-car camera will provide video recordings of interactions between officers and members of the public, which could be used in court.
Brantford Police Service received provincial funding for the systems “to leverage technology, which will enhance community and officer safety, and increase transparency and accountability in policing.”
