Authorities seized an explosive package intended for a judge in

Political violence against the ruling conservative government has intensified in Greece in recent months.

A Greek anarchist group announced on Monday that it was responsible for the explosive package sent to a Thessaloniki judge earlier this month.

The authorities got hold of the mail package last week before it was delivered to the judge marked as the recipient, and personal injuries were avoided.

This was the third similar case since the beginning of December.

According to a statement uploaded online, the previously unknown group “Armed Response†was behind the latest attack against the authorities.

The group accused the judges of inhumane sentences and claimed they were collaborating with the country’s conservative government.

In Greece, the prime minister Kyriákos Mitsotákis the conservative New Democracy party won the country’s parliamentary elections last summer with a clear majority.

In its message, the anarchist group warned of new attacks against prosecutors, police and judges.

Increased violence

Political violence has continued to plague Greece in the 21st century.

Homemade explosives and fuel bottles were used against leaders, officials and entrepreneurs when the country’s economy fell into a debt crisis during the years 2009-2018.

In the last five years, however, the number of such attacks has been decreasing, the news agency Reuters reports.

The calmer season ended in December, when the police found an explosive device installed in the premises of the riot police, which was successfully dismantled.

Later in February, a bomb exploded outside the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs in the capital, Athens. The building was damaged, but no one was injured in the attack.
