Authorities’ efforts are not effective enough when it comes to determining the identity of people who come to Sweden, an audit by the National Audit Office shows.
The review has focused on border controls, population registration and applications for residence permits and citizenship.
The shortcomings can lead to people being granted a residence permit without having the right to it. They are also believed to be the basis for identity-related crime, threats to Sweden’s security and incorrect welfare payments.
The shortcomings of the Migration Agency, the Tax Agency and the State Service Center are considered particularly serious, as their work affects their own and other authorities’ decisions and measures.
The National Audit Office also points to shortcomings in terms of cooperation and exchange of information between authorities.
“The work needs to be more efficient, both when it comes to determining identities and detecting and correcting incorrectly registered identities,” says Director of the National Audit Office Claudia Gardberg Morner in a press release.
