Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer resigns

He announces them himself X after the government talks with the social democratic SPÖ on Saturday evening broke down.

The SPÖ and the conservative ÖVP have ruled Austria before, but in the elections in September they received the smallest possible majority in the parliament with a total of 92 of the 183 seats.

Expected to resign as party leader

The Austrian newspaper crown writes that Karl Nehammer is also expected to resign as party leader for the ÖVP. The party board will meet at 10 a.m. on Sunday, and three names, Karoline Edstadler, Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer and Sebastian Kurz, are rumored to be possible successors to Nehammer.

Sebastian Kurz resigned as Chancellor of Austria in 2021 after being accused of corruption. Shortly after his resignation, he announced his intention to leave politics altogether. According to Krone, there is now a possibility that he will return to politics.

However, information to the newspaper claims that Karoline Edstadler, who is said to have powerful advocates in the party, is the most prominent opponent of Kurz.
