A terrorist motif is behind Saturday’s deadly knife attack in Austria, according to the authorities.
“It’s an Islamist attack with IS connection,” said Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
The suspected perpetrator, who is described as a 23-year-old Syrian citizen, has been radicalized in a short time via the Internet, according to Karner.
He was arrested shortly after the knife attack in the city of Villach in southern Austria on Saturday night.
In the attack, a 14-year-old boy was killed and another five people were injured, two of whom are seriously.
According to police spokesman Rainer Dionisio, the 23-year-old is passing by the city center. He was stopped when a food supplier who witnessed the attack drove him with his car. According to the police, it probably prevented further crimes.
