After last week’s catastrophic weather in central Europe, Austria has already started paying compensation to victims, authorities in Vienna announce.
– It is important that the victims receive quick help, says Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
It is primarily flood victims in the region of Lower Austria that are covered. The authorities state that everyone who has already applied has received money paid out, a total of around one million euros (just over eleven million kroner). It is only a fraction of the billion euros that is in a disaster fund, reports the news agency APA.
Lower Austria is one of the most affected areas, since enormous amounts of rain from the storm Boris in the last week came to parts of Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Italy, among others. The rain has accumulated in overflowing rivers, affecting several regions as the water masses have so slowly made their way downstream.
