Piastri has been part of Alpine’s junior program since 2020 and is during this year’s Formula 1 season a reserve for both Alpine and McLaren.
The 21-year-old debuted in Formula 2 last season and won the championship, and he also won the Formula 3 championship the year before.
“Oscar is a rare talent. We have seen him develop and mature into a driver who is more than ready to make the step up to Formula 1,” Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer said in a statement, according to Formula 1.
As recently as yesterday, Monday, Aston Martin announced that Fernando Alonso, this season at Alpine, replaces Sebastian Vettel (retires) from next season.
