OPEN AUSTRALIA. In a fairly tense match, especially with the referee, the Russian Medvedev qualified for the Australian Open final and will find Nadal.
New Grand Slam final for the Russian Daniil Medvedev, seeded number 2 of this Australian Open. In a shock against the Greek Tsitsipas, Medvedev won in four sets in less than three hours of play. Winner of the tie break in the first set, the Russian came out of his concentration to lose the second set 6-4. He even completely freaked out in front of the referee during a change of sides and could have had a much heavier sanction.
Once again focused, the Russian set up a false rhythm before accelerating at the best of times to win the 3rd set 6-4. The fourth round, on the other hand, was a real lone rider for the Russian who finally won 7-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. The latter will find Rafael Nadal who qualified for the final, his 29th career and his 6th in Australia, by eliminating in four sets Matteo Berrettini, who defeated Gaël Monfils in the quarter-finals.
In less than 3 hours, “Rafa” sickened the Italian who did not see the light of day for two sets (6-3, 6-2). The third set was finally an opportunity for the Italian to show his selflessness by finally letting go of his shots and avoiding, above all, watering the court with unforced errors. With this intensity the Roman even chained five white games before cracking in the 4th set against a Spaniard who never gives up. “I need to suffer, to fight. To be where I am today means a lot to me,” the Spaniard explained on the court. For me, it’s the Australian Open more than anything today. I never thought I would have another chance this year.”
