Australia votes on indigenous peoples
The polls in Australia have opened for a historic referendum on giving indigenous peoples recognition in the constitution.
Close to 18 million Australians will on Saturday vote yes or no to the proposal, which also involves the establishment of an advisory body to be consulted on legislative matters relating to indigenous peoples. Opinion polls have pointed to an advantage for the no side.
Australia’s various indigenous peoples have lived on the continent for more than 60,000 years.
