Australia plans to criminalize the distribution of deep fake porn images

Different parts of the world are currently struggling with the spread of deepfake pornography.

The Australian government is preparing new legislation that will make it a crime to share deepfake porn images of a person without their consent.

Deepfake means that the face or body of another person – usually a well-known person in the public eye – has been added to another person’s body using artificial intelligence.

In the bill, sharing deepfake porn images could result in a prison sentence of up to six years. The prison sentence could increase to seven years if the person who distributes the pornographic material has also created the material in question.

Attorney General of Australia by Mark Dreyfus according to the phenomenon in which sexually offensive images of objects are spread, it primarily targets women and girls.

– It can cause deep and long-term harm to the victims, the minister says in his statement.

The bill will be presented to the country’s parliament next week. The new law would only apply to adults, as children are already protected by separate legislation on child abuse.
