Hewitt played his part in the success against Croatia in Malaga. He chose to match the pair of Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson in the decisive doubles match against Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic, winners of Wimbledon 2021 and one of the world’s strongest doubles pairs.
Purcell and Thompson thanked the trust and won the two hour and 14 minute drama 6–7 (3–7), 7–5, 6–4.
Before that, Alex de Minaur had beaten higher-ranked Marin Cilic with a clear 6–2, 6–2 and Borna Coric leveled at 1–1 via 6–4, 6–3 against Thanasi Kokkinakis.
