The Burmese junta tightens its grip against Aung San Suu Kyi. A military court sentenced the former leader to six years in prison on Monday August 15 for corruption. This sentence is in addition to eleven years in prison pronounced during a river trial, which had been denounced as political by the international community.

The 77-year-old Burmese opponent was arrested a year and a half ago and then detained in a prison in Naypyidaw at the end of June. Since then, in closed trials, deemed political by those close to her, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been sentenced to a total of 17 years in prison.

Aung San Suu Kyi is targeted by a multitude of offenses: violation of a law on state secrets dating from the colonial era, electoral fraud, sedition, corruption. She faces decades in prison.

Many voices denounce judicial harassment motivated by political considerations, with the aim of permanently removing from public and political life the daughter of the hero of independence and big winner of the 2015 and 2020 elections.
