A French start-up has created an augmented reality GPS system for motorcyclists. Thanks to an optical module fitted with a prism, it projects a display several meters in front of the driver so that it can be viewed while keeping their eyes on the road.
Improving the safety of motorcyclists is the company’s objective EyeLights. The start-up French company has developed a head-up display called EyeRide to integrate directly into any helmet motorbike. Connected to the smartphone, it displays the GPSor others apps such as calls and music, directly in the driver’s field of vision.
With its tiny screen placed a few centimeters from theeye, this small device is reminiscent of the operation of Google Glass. It also uses a similar system of prism which allows it to project the image at a perceived distance of three meters and thus allows not to lose sight of the road. The image is generated using a small nano Oled screen transparent with a brightness maximum of 3,000 nits.
A system soon to be integrated into helmets and adapted to cars
The goal is to avoid looking at the smart phone on the handlebars and therefore no longer look at the road. It is inspired by head-up displays (HUD) used in fighter aircraft. EyeLights highlights a reaction time saving of 4.3 seconds on average. The system is made up of the optical module to be fixed in the helmet, connected to an external box to be glued to the side of the helmet and which connects to the smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android-Auto. It comes with a headset that plugs into the jack on the exterior module and allows you to make calls, talk to other bikers, and control the display by voice.
The system is sold for 499 euros. EyeLights also creates versions for the police and military, as well as for fighter pilots of the F-35. The firm also intends to offer a helmet in carbon high-end connected, as well as a system of augmented reality for the car windshields.
