Covid-19 continues to affect our lives with many variants. This virus, which has killed millions of people, causes various diseases. According to new research, people over the age of 65 who catch Covid are at a high risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A study of 6 million seniors, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, found that older people infected with coronavirus were 50 to 80% more susceptible to the debilitating form of dementia in the year following their COVID diagnosis, Science Daily reported. It was stated that the most risky group was women over the age of 85.
DIRECT AFFECTS NOT YET DETERMINED
Researchers have yet to determine whether COVID directly triggers Alzheimer’s or whether it merely accelerates the presence of the virus. “The factors involved in the development of Alzheimer’s disease are poorly understood, but two parts that seem important are previous infections, particularly viral infections and inflammation,” said study co-author Pamela Davis.
ALZHEIMER IS A SERIOUS AND DIFFICULT DISEASE
“Alzheimer’s disease is a serious and challenging disease, and we thought we could turn some of the tide by reducing common risk factors such as hypertension, heart disease, obesity and a sedentary lifestyle,” Davis said.
