Over ten “terrorists” have been shot during a raid in the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the Israeli military says.
The operation began on Tuesday and continues on Wednesday with the stated goal of “eradicating terrorism”.
Nine people have been killed in Jenin and one person in a nearby village, according to the Palestinian Authority (PA), which maintains the limited autonomy of the West Bank, reports The Times of Israel.
Several airstrikes have been carried out and several explosive devices have been defused during the raid, according to Israel, which announced on Tuesday that the operation would last “as long as necessary”.
The operation in the city of Jenin reflects what the Israeli military has learned from repeated strikes in Gaza, according to Defense Minister Israel Katz. The lesson is about the importance of eliminating terrorists and destroying terrorist infrastructure in Jenin – “without terrorism returning,” he said in a statement on Wednesday, according to Haaretz.
“We will not allow the tentacles of Iran or radical Sunni Islam to endanger the lives of settlers, or to establish a terror front east of Israel,” says Katz.
