Ukraine went from three medals to six in Paris in a matter of hours on Sunday night. The three medalists celebrated together inside the packed Stade de France, 76,500 spectators. However, it was a thoughtful celebration in the shadow of the Russian offensive.
– There are almost 500 sportsmen who died in this war. They will never compete. They will never celebrate. They will never feel this atmosphere. My gold medal is dedicated to them, says Mahuchikh according to AP.

Victory not entirely obvious
Mahuchikh set the world record in Paris at another venue with 2.10 a couple of weeks ago and won in a modest 2.00. She was threatened by Australian Nicola Olyslagers who also took 2.00 and had several good attempts at 2.02.
When the gold was ready, Mahuchikh did not show a face but concentrated on the jumping. After two failed attempts at 2.02, she saved one to 2.04 which was too high. Only then did she start celebrating.
– All the medals are for our country, Ukraine, for our defense forces, Only thanks to them we have the opportunity to be here, says Mahuchikh after his first Olympic gold.
Notably, 1.95 was enough for bronze. Maja Nilsson was one of those who sued SOK when she had to stay at home as she only managed 1.91 this year – has a personal record of 1.96.
