The total prize money is increased by almost a third to the equivalent of SEK 94 million, compared to the last four years, and is the highest the competition has had since its inception in 2010.
Each competition, in Sweden including the one in Stockholm, next year will have five million kroner in prize money and in each branch that is part of the Diamond League, between 300,000 and 500,000 kroner will be awarded at each competition.
In the final competition, there is significantly more prize money to compete for, a total of SEK 22.4 million. There, a victory in the final will bring between 600,000 and one million kroner. The Diamond League has not communicated how the distribution looks between the branches.
Michael Johnson has launched the “Grand Slam Track”
At last weekend’s DL final in Brussels, a branch win was rewarded with SEK 300,000.
“The Wanda Diamond League wants to continue to reward the athletes more and at the same time ensure the long-term sustainability of the competition series,” says CEO Petr Stastny.
At the same time, sprint legend Michael Johnson has announced a completely new form of competition “Grand Slam Track” next year. Four collections are the plan and the budget is a total of SEK 300 million. There are only runners in this format and the pole vaulter Armand Duplantis is not expected to participate.
