Athletics: Noah Lyles won Olympic gold in the 100 meters – by five thousandths of a margin

The American Noah Lyles has been one of the world’s best sprinters in recent years, with, among other things, double Olympic gold in both 100 and 200 meters.

But his only Olympic medal was a bronze in the 200 meters from Tokyo 2021.

No one knew who won

Tonight, however, he got his long-awaited Olympic gold – after a final that will go down in history.

When the 100 meters were finished, no one knew who was the first to cross the finish line, as four of the runners crossed the finish line basically at the same time.

Thompson was second

But after a while of waiting, the news came: Noah Lyles was the fastest. When the results list was presented, it was revealed that both Lyle’s and Jamaican Kishane Thompson’s time was 9.79 (a personal best for Lyles) – but that Lyle’s finish saw him cross the finish line five thousandths ahead of Thompson.

The bronze went to Fred Kerley, USA, who was just two hundredths slower than the two in front.

Back to fourth place, which went to South Africa’s Akani Simbine, there was only one hundredth more.

The Olympic gold was the USA’s first at the distance since Justin Gatlin won in Athens in 2004.
